The deepening of the harbour basin under the Jaye Container Terminal phase three (JCT-3) is now in progress, an SLPA spokesman said yesterday. The Japanese company Penta Ocean Wakachiku Joint Venture which secured the tender for the project has employed an ultra modern dredging vessel equipped with the latest technology and a team of foreign experts for the task, he said. The total estimated cost for the full five month project which involves the deepening of the Main Access Channel and the harbour basin under JCT-3 and JCT-4 is Rupees 2.5 Billion, and is entirely borne by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA). The dredging of the two JCT terminals will take 50 days each and they will be closed for operations during this period. Under the project, the harbour basin under the JCT terminals will be deepened from 14 meters to 15 meters and the main channels from 15 meters to 16 meters. It is expected that the projects will help upgrade the Port of Colombo as one of the main hubs in Asia and enable larger ships to enter the Port of Colombo.
