Death toll rises in weekend rail accident
[January 15, 2002 - 7.45 GMT]

Fourteen commuters, among them two children, were killed when an intercity train went off the tracks at Kiriwellapitiya in Rambukkana, 87 km off Colombo. 250 other passengers suffered injuries some of them serious ones.

The wounded persons were rushed to the Rambukkana and Kegalle hospitals. The failure of the  brakes system was reportedly the cause of the accident. A one-member committee has been appointed to probe the incident.

The Railway’s Chief Operations Superintendent, Chandratilaka said, normal train services on the Colombo- Kandy main line resumed yesterday morning as the repair of the damaged track was completed on Sunday night.
