The Tokyo Cement Group through its subsidiary Samudra Cement Company Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. has set up a cement bagging plant at the Colombo port, investing over Rs. 500mn. “A special feature of this terminal is the ‘drive-thru’ underneath the silo. It helps avoid congestion in the port premises as the trucks would be automatically loaded under the silo without any delay,” the General Manager of Samudra Cement Company Priyantha Aponso said. The plant has an initial capacity to bag 600,000 metric tons of cement per annum and a loading capacity of 2,200 bags (eight lorries) per hour. “Specially designed ‘dust suckers’ are another speciality of the plant. It ensures a minimum discharge of dust to the environment,” he said. STUP Consultants India designed the plant, while BMH of Germany supplied the plan and machinery. Tokyo Cement was also the first Sri Lankan company to receive the ISO 14001 – environment management system certificate.
