International ban on child sex trade
[January 21, 2002 - 11.00 GMT]

An international treaty to ban the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography has come into force on Friday, a UN press release said.

The Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child was ratified by Romania – the tenth country to do so - on October 23, 2001.

In a press release UNICEF has hailed the ban and invited more countries to co-operate to ensure the protection of children being trafficked across borders.

Meanwhile, at the recently held 11th SAARC Summit the seven-member South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation signed two conventions to protect children from all forms of abuse.
