The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam Monday evening released ten prisoners at Kilinochchi in northern Sri Lanka, as a ‘gesture of goodwill and to further strengthen the foundation laid for peace.’ Of those released, three were soldiers from the Sri Lankan Army and the rest were crewmembers of the “Princess Cash” and the MV Missen, ICRC’s Head of Delegation, Isabella Barras said. The leader of the political wing of the LTTE, Thamil Chelvam, released the detainees to E.P. Nanayakkara, President of the Relatives of Servicemen Missing in Action in the presence of local and foreign journalists. Thamil Chelvam who read out a message from LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran on the occasion said that they still believed negotiations were the means of resolving the conflict and that they were happy with the steps taken by the new Government. Earlier this month, the Government of Sri Lanka, with the aim of creating a conducive environment for peace negotiations, had eased the restrictions on the free movement of civilians between the LTTE controlled areas and the Government controlled areas, removed the embargo on the transport of several items to LTTE controlled areas. The Government and the LTTE have both announced an extension of the unilateral ceasefire for another month.
