[January 24, 2002 - 10.45 GMT]

The University of Peradeniya has set off a project to design and produce an audiovisual series of programmes on healthy life styles for public education in Sri Lanka.

The series would cover “common risk factors” responsible for damaging yet preventable illnesses and disability in Sri Lanka.  It would be available on video and other multimedia formats.

“Stress, environment, nutrition, accidents, lack of exercise, addictions and sexual behaviour would be some of the key issues of the series,” a spokesman for Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya said.

The proposed project is a joint venture of the Departments of Community Medicine and Community Dental Health of the Faculties of Medicine and Dental Science of the University.

The University in partnership with the Health Education Bureau of Health Ministry and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will implement the project.

The Government of Japan has provided a sum of US$ 61,720 (around SL Rs. 5.7 million) to the University towards this project.
