“Civil society can play a vital role to usher in peace to the nation” - Relatives of Servicemen Missing in Action

“Civil society has a key role to play not only in the South but also in the North to usher in peace to the country,” E.P. Nanayakkara, President of the Association of Relatives of Servicemen Missing in Action, said at a press briefing held in Colombo, Thursday.

He also said that the exchange of prisoners is a vital and integral part of the peace process.

Two of the seven detainees released, explaining their experience in LTTE custody said that they did not receive any harsh treatment from the LTTE and hoped that all sections of society would get together to put an end to the war.

Thamilchelvam, head of the political wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam at a press conference Monday at Killinochchi said, “Our frank opinion about this war is that it is an unwanted and an unnecessary war. We are confident and hopeful that the present government will set in place the necessary mechanisms and infrastructure and start the negotiation process sincerely.”
