World Bank to fund power
[January 26, 2002 - 10.00 GMT]

The World Bank has pledged financial support to the government for power projects. Minister of Finance K.N. Choksy said that the World Bank has given this assurance under an International Development Agency credit line provided the government prepares a workable development plan.

The decision comes as a result of a discussion held earlier this week between Choksy and Mariana Todroya, World Bank Country Director in Sri Lanka. New sources of hydropower generation in a decentralized system were discussed at the meeting.

Todroya also mentioned that the country’s industrial development projects need adequate power supplies. She also expressed the World Bank’s commitment to assisting Sri Lanka and said it believes Sri Lanka’s economic outlook would improve significantly if internationally funded projects are managed and supervised properly.
