[February 05, 2002 - 7.30 GMT]

The PA Parliamentary Committee yesterday [Monday] appointed Chief Opposition Whip Mahinda Rajapakse as the Leader of the Opposition.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga proposed his name to the post, and former Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar seconded it.

Former Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake has informed the PA of his resignation from the post of Leader of the Opposition.

The new Opposition Leader speaking to the PRIU soon after his appointment said, “It was President Kumaratunga who initiated the peace process. We need peace and we will support any move that could achieve peace”.
