Grand Independence Day celebration in Chennai

Sri Lanka’s 54th Independence Day was celebrated on a grand scale on February 4 in Chennai, India.

The significance of this year’s commemoration was the ordination of thirty Tamil children from India as Buddhist monks and the commencement of Tamil language classes for Sri Lankan monks.

“The Independence Day celebrations organised in Chennai would be a landmark and it would pave the way to resolve many problems related to the ongoing war in Sri Lanka,” Ven.Banagala Upatissa Nayake Thera, Chairman of Sri Lankan Mahabodhi Society [SLMS] said.

The ceremony was organised by the Sri Lankan Mahabodhi Society with the assistance of TEC Sri Lanka and the Sri Lankan High Commission in India
