[February 07, 2002 - 10.30 GMT]

While the de-mining of the Kandy-Jaffna A9 highway continues, the Sri Lanka Army and the members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have begun a similar operation in Uyilankulam on the Vavuniya-Mannar road, Military spokesman Brigadier Sanath Karunaratne said.

A press release says both the troops and the LTTE began their de-mining at different sites in Omanthai, 10 km North of Vavuniya watched by the  International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Wednesday, February 06.

The ICRC said that the task would clear the roads and adjoining areas ensuring the protection of the civilians.

Through this task, the Government aims to reopen the major highways in Vavuniya, Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi districts and open the Jaffna-Kandy A9 highway, which connects the Jaffna peninsula to the rest of the country.

The Vavuniya-Trincomalee road Government opened for vehicular traffic on Independence Day and a bus service has already begun between the two cities.
