Dr.Gamini Corea has been made the new Chairman of the Board of the South Centre, an office he will hold for the next three years. Dr Corea was Secretary General of United Nations cooperation on Trade and Development [UNCTAD] for a period of ten years from 1974. While holding some important posts in the multilateral sphere, Dr. Corea played a central role in South-South cooperation. He has contributed immensely to the work of the G-77, Non Aligned Movement and in particular South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation [SAARC]. The South Centre was established in 1995 as an Intergovernmental body of developing countries, which currently comprises 46 member states. The South Centre assists in developing points of view of the South on major policy issues and to generate action oriented proposals for the collective consideration of Southern governments, institutions of South-South co-operation, intergovernmental organisations of the South and NGOs and the community at large.
