‘Hotel Tea Factory’ wins UNESCO award

Hotel Tea Factory has won the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Merit Award 2001 for the impressive conversion of a dilapidated tea factory into a luxury hotel complex, demonstrating a challenging adaptive reuse project executed with commendable skill and vision.

“The Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards recognize the efforts of private individuals and organizations who have successfully restored and conserved structures and buildings of heritage value in the region” a press release issued by UNESCO said.

This year’s Awards programme drew 40 projects from 13 countries and administrative areas in the Asia-Pacific region.

Located in Kandapola, Nuwara Eliya, Hotel Tea Factory has won many prestigious international awards including the RICS Award conferred by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, London in October 2000.

The Tea Factory was the first unique theme hotel in Sri Lanka.
