The Elections Commissioner has announced the conduct of the fourth Local Government elections on March 20 and 25.

The polling in 23 districts will be conducted on March 20. Elections in the Northern and Eastern Provinces will be held on March 25.

Accordingly, 12 million voters countrywide, including the North-East, will be able to elect representatives to 14 Municipal Councils, 37 Urban Councils and 258 Pradeshiya Sabhas.

“27 political parties and 4, 562 independent candidates are contesting this election,” a spokesman for the Department of Elections said.

“Steps have been taken to ensure a free and fair election in the country”, he added.

Local elections in the North and the East were last held in 1998 while representatives to local bodies in the rest of the country were elected in 1997.
