Nearly one hundred overseas participants including a large number of Sri Lankan psychiatrists working overseas are expected to attend an International conference on mental health to be held in Colombo from April 4 to 7. A special session at the conference has been devoted to the discussion of the World Health Report 2001 on Mental Health published by the World Health Organisation. Suicide, elderly mental health and trauma are some of the key issues to be addressed at the conference. The event has been organised to mark the twentieth anniversary of the National Council for Mental Health in Sri Lanka better known as “Sahanaya”. “Sahanaya”, a Non Governmental Organisation, aims at improving the mental health of the people by ensuring the active participation of the community in this task. The opening of the Mental Health Resource Centre at Gorakana and an art exhibition will be the other major events organised to mark the anniversary.
