[February 15, 2002 - 10.45 GMT]

The Jaffna-Kandy A-9 highway was reopened today, February15 after the de-mining operation both by government troops and the LTTE concluded on Tuesday.

A Government Official in Vanni said that the road from Omanthai to Kilinochchi was opened around 10:30 a.m. while the Uyilankulam road in Mannar was opened in the afternoon for both civilian and vehicular traffic.

“Ministers Milinda Moragoda, R.A.D. Sirisena and several other MPs were present at the opening ceremony, but no LTTE representatives were present,” he said.

He also said that 600 civilians had crossed over to the LTTE held area while 800 from the LTTE held area moved to the government-controlled area at Omanthai to mark the event.

He added that although a direct bus service had not begun between the two points by Friday afternoon, transport will continue as before with people travelling to a common point (Omanthai) to change buses.

The Piramanalankulam checkpoint, the main gateway between government and LTTE held areas in the North would be closed from today since the opening of the A9 highway.

The A-9 highway has remained closed since May 13, 1997 when the army launched Operation Jayasikuru.
