Releasing the details of the discussions the High commission stated that The Prime Minister had briefed the Singaporean leaders on the current situation of the peace process. Wickremasinghe said that his government had addressed several humanitarian issues faced by the people in the LTTE held areas, in order to have a conducive environment, which would help as a confidence-building measure, to begin the talks. Reflecting on the government’s programme to revamp the country’s economy, the Prime Minister expressed the view that Sri Lanka would be concentrating on strengthening and developing relations with South Asia, and with India in particular. In this context, the Prime Minister referred to the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India, and the need to develop a completely free trade area using the FTA as a starting point. In the South East Asian region Sri Lanka considers Singapore as a gateway to the entire region, and therefore, the Prime Minister reiterated the view that Sri Lanka looked to Singapore for closer collaboration, which would be of mutual benefit to both countries.
