The Japanese Government has granted Rs. 106 million (approximately US $ 1.5 million) for two social development projects in Sri Lanka. A sum of US $ 282,000 was offered under the Japanese Social Development Fund Grant for Legal Aid – a part of Japan Social Development Fund (JSDF) - through the Legal and Judicial Reform Project of the World Bank to offer legal aid to poverty-stricken women in the country. “The main objective of the Grant would be to provide women with legal services (including mediation), psychological counselling and medical services in cases involved with domestic violence, abuse, alimony and child custody,” the Japanese Embassy in Sri Lanka said in a press release. A Grant of US $ 867,500 was also offered through the Japan Policy and Human Resources Development Fund (PHRD) – another pact through the World Bank - to support the Development of Undergraduate-level Education Project. The Project aims at transforming university education into a more ‘flexible system responding to the needs of the country and the changing demands of the labour market’.
