UN Mission evaluates proliferation of illicit weapons in Sri Lanka
[February 20, 2002 - 10.00 GMT]

A team of officials from the United Nations Secretariat visited Sri Lanka from February 11 to 18, 2002 to explore the potential for UN assistance to address the threat posed by illicit small arms in the country, the Foreign Ministry announced Tuesday.

The Evaluation Mission was led by the UN Department for Disarmament Affairs, and included representatives from the UN Department for Political Affairs and the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs as well as the UN Country Office in Sri Lanka.

The UN Mission’s visit to Sri Lanka is in pursuance of the implementation of the programme of action adopted at the July 2001 UN Conference on Illicit Small Arms and Light Weapons in All its Aspects in New York.

The findings and the recommendations of the mission will be forwarded to the Sri Lankan Government.
