Priority for relations with neighboring countries says Foreign Minister
[February 21, 2002 - 11.30 GMT]

Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando said yesterday that regional neighbours would receive priority in Sri Lanka’s international relations policy.

“My first visit as the Foreign Minister was to India with the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe and then to the SAARC Summit in Katmandu last January,” the Foreign Minster said.

The Foreign Minister said that he was planning to visit Pakistan, the Maldives, Bangladesh and Bhutan.

Responding to a question, the Minister said that his role in the peace process was to build up a favourable international image for Sri Lanka, which has been ravaged by the war.

Asked whether he was planning to visit Afghanistan, the Minister said the security situation there was not yet satisfactory for such a visit.
