[February 22, 2002 - 12.40 GMT]

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) has launched ‘Project Hope’ - a program estimated to cost Rs.100 m. (US $ 1.07m) to provide telecommunication facilities in the Jaffna peninsula.

The project initially will furnish 4000 telephone lines to Jaffna and plans to give 10,000 connections to the North within the next four months.

A convoy of eight trucks, with equipment for the project, left for Jaffna Thursday, from the SLT Head Office in Colombo.

SLT has appointed a special team to handle the project and ensure early completion.
