Universal Music sign on Bathiya & Santhush

The world’s leading music company signed on Saturday, two of Sri Lanka’s most promising musicians marking the country’s formal entry to international music publishing.

With the signing of the contract Bathiya & Santhush became Sri Lanka’s first recording and performing artistes to be offered such a contract by an international music publishing company.

Steven Folk, Director Asia-Pacific of Universal Music Publishing who with John Reston, Regional A&R Director of Universal Group signed on behalf of the company. Speaking on the occasion, Folk said that he was very impressed by originality and song writing abilities of Bathiya and Santhush.

Universal Music Publishing is part of Vivendi Universal - the world's leading music company with wholly owned record operations or licensees in 63 countries around the world and with one of the largest global music publishing businesses.

Bathiya & Santhush join Universal Music Group’s exclusive club of musical greats such as Elton John, Sting, Shaggy and Shania Twain.

“I hope to introduce their music and creativity to countries in the region like India and China and even to Australia”, Steven added.

“This is one of the biggest achievements in our music life. This would give the opportunity to all music lovers across the world to enjoy Sri Lankan music”, a beaming Santhush told PRIU.

Bathiya said that their main aim was to bring Sri Lankan music to the international level.

“By signing a contract with Universal Music Publishing, Bathiya and Santhush have indeed succeeded in achieving acclaim not only for themselves but for Sri Lanka as well, proving that this island has a wealth of talent capable of achieving fame and recognition in the world of international music”, a press release issued by the Sri Lanka Tourist Board said.

Path breakers in the Sri Lankan Music scene Bathiya and Santhush made Sri Lanka proud when they won the Silver Award at the 'Azia Dauysy', World Music Festival organised by the “Voice of Asia” International Music Foundation in Kazakhstan, Russia last August. The duo was rated No.2 in the Euro-Asia Region and No.1 in Asia.
