President denies media reports

President Chandrika Kumaratunga in a Press Release issued to the media Wednesday, denied a statement attributed to her by several local and foreign media.

“The President wishes to categorically deny the said statement attributed to the effect that ‘She can cancel the MOU with one letter to the Army Commander’. What the President said was she is concerned about certain clauses in the said MOU and that she was awaiting the report of the Committee appointed by her to study the MOU in detail. The President will issue a statement thereafter,” the Release added.

The attention of H. E. the President has been drawn to several news items in the local and foreign media, referring to a statement purported to have been made by her, regarding the Memorandum of Understanding, between the Prime Minister Hon. Ranil Wickremasinghe and the LTTE Leader Mr. V. Pirabhakaran.

The President wishes to categorically deny the said statement attributed to the effect that ‘She can cancel the MOU with one letter to the Army Commander’. What the President said was she is concerned about certain clauses in the said MOU and that she was awaiting the report of the Committee appointed by her to study the MOU in detail. The President will issue a statement thereafter.

The President reiterates that she continues to remain fully committed to a negotiated settlement to the ethnic conflict; hence she does not have any intention to hinder the negotiation process, which she herself began.
