ILO programme to improve small businesses
[March 1, 2002 - 10.00 GMT]

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has launched a programme to provide management training to micro and small-scale entrepreneurs.

The ‘Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB)’ Programme - a management training program - of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) which had sought partnerships with Business Development Services Organisations in Sri Lanka, had their first information meeting with the Organisations on Thursday.

The SIYB aims at providing business management training to micro and small-scale entrepreneurs (MSEs) to start and improve their businesses and in turn create more and better employment in developing economies and economies in transition.

At the meeting held at Hotel Ceylon Continental Thursday, the SIYB Lanka Project Coordinator and ILO Representative, Andreas Klemmer discussed in detail the National Project and briefed the organisations on the process of selection of the partners. He also discussed the SIYB offers to the selected partner organisations.

The SIYB Lanka Project was first launched in 2000 on a trial basis in the Matara and Hambantota districts in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka.

“It’s a new package which addresses growth oriented small scale entrepreneurs, who want to break through the glass ceiling of being a small scale enterprise,” Andreas Klemmer said.
