Major General Trond Furuhovde, Head of the Mission tasked with monitoring the implementation of the Ceasefire Agreement between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) met with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe this morning, a spokesman for the PM’s office said today.

Furuhovde arrived early Saturday aboard a Sri Lankan Airlines flight from Paris.

Major General Trond Furuhovde was formerly Special Advisor to the Permanent Mission of Norway to the United Nations, New York. He was commissioned a lieutenant in the Royal Norwegian Army in 1963 and during a varied career, served as Chief of Staff of the United Nations Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) 1988-89 and, again, as Force Commander of UNIFIL, 1993-95. Among his decorations are those of Commander and Grand Officer of Lebanon's National Cedar Order.

Wickremasinghe signed a Ceasefire Agreement with the leader of the LTTE, V. Prabhakaran February 22, ending nearly twenty years of war.

According to the Agreement the Government and the LTTE have agreed to set up an international monitoring mission to enquire into any instance of violation of the terms of the Agreement.
