‘Sirasa’ vies for Guinness record
[March 4, 2002 - 10.45 GMT]

A 600 ft. long, 2-˝ ft.  wide ‘kiribath’ (milk rice) was cooked in Colombo on Sunday to mark the eighth anniversary of Sirasa Radio.

Both the Sinhala and Tamil communities usually serve "Kiribath" - rice cooked with coconut milk - on ceremonial occasions.

Hundred and Fifty cooks led by Publis Silva, Head Chef of the Mount Lavinia Hotel, scraped 2000 coconuts and boiled 1000 kilograms of white rice to make this giant preparation.

The 'lunumiris' or chillie paste to eat the milk rice weighed some 200 kilograms.

Sirasa officials hope their creation will be recognised as the world's largest of its kind by the Guinness Book of World Records.
