WFP urges aid to feed 77,000 victims of strife in Sri Lanka
[March 7, 2002 - 7.30 GMT]

Jeff Taft-Dick, The World Food Programme (WFP)’s Country Director for Sri Lanka has appealed to the international community to help WFP to feed 77,000 victims of strife in the North-East a WFP press release said.

The victims, who now live in Government Welfare Centres, have been deprived of the food rations they usually receive from the WFP due to a sharp drop in donor support.

“For the last three months, residents of welfare centres have received very little food, if any,” says Taft-Dick.

“We must not let hunger become an obstacle in the road to peace in Sri Lanka,” he adds.
