Up up and away…
[March 9, 2002 - 9.00 GMT]

It was an incredible sight at the Met department grounds this morning as the first ever hot air balloon in Sri Lanka prepared to take off.

The balloon Destiny, powered by liquid petroleum gas (LPG), is capable of carrying three persons. Captain Anil Jayasinghe, a commander at Sri Lankan Airlines responsible for initiating the project, said Destiny would mainly be used for advertising purposes.

Among those witnessing the event were Secretary to the Prime Minster Bradman Weerakoon, British High Commissioner Linda Duffield and Director General of the Department of Civil Aviation Lal Liyanarachchi, who had all been a part of making the event possible. Traffic almost came to a standstill as passersby stopped to take a glimpse of the huge multicoloured balloon, a first for Sri Lanka.

The balloon was adorned with the national flag and the flag of Jayasinghe’s alma mater, St. Thomas College. After the national anthem and two minutes silence for those whose lives have been lost in the line of duty, a proud Jayasinghe completed the launch with a tour of Colombo city.
