[March 13, 2002 - 9.00 GMT]

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in a message to mark Maha Sivarathri Day said that Sri Lankans were facing a challenge to rebuild peace and unity and Maha Sivarathri Day is a noble example when Hindus the world over pray for peace and unity.

The Hindu festival celebrated March 12, is a government holiday in Sri Lanka.

The full message:

"First of all, I would like to extend my best wishes to all the Sri Lankan Hindu devotees who celebrate the Maha Sivarathri today along with millions of Hindu devotees throughout the world. Hindus in 74 countries of the world celebrate this noble religious day with devotion. Hindus are not confined to one nation. They belong to different nations. Today they pray to God Sivaperuman. They pray for 24 hours without sleep.

The aim of the Maha Sivarathri Day is to establish prosperity for humanity. On this day, Hindus pray for peace and unity. The Tamil people who constitute the majority of the Hindu devotees in Sri Lanka celebrate this Maha Sivarathri Day with 1001 expectations for peace and unity in the country.

We are facing a challenge to rebuild peace and unity. This is an important factor. Today this is essential for the Sri Lankan society. But the peace we win should be honourable. Today, Hindu devotees throughout the world belonging to various nations and speaking various languages are united without any racial or linguistic differences in praying to God Siva. This is a noble example of peace and unity. I wish that the noble expectations of the Sri Lankan Hindus for peace and prosperity be fulfilled."
