[March 13, 2002 - 11.15 GMT]

The People’s Alliance  - the main opposition party in Parliament, today charged that there was a plot to assassinate President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

Media Spokesman for the People’s Alliance (PA) and Member of Parliament Dr. Sarath Amunugama described attempts made to weaken the President’s Security Division as the first step taken towards achieving this goal. The charges were made at a press conference held in Colombo Wednesday evening.

He further said that two supporters of the PA had been abducted and killed in Nivitigala, Tuesday. He also condemned the violence against People’s Alliance supporters in the run-up to the Local Government Elections. Former Media Minister, Mangala Samaraweera, made a special appeal to the government to take necessary measures to conduct a free and fair election.
