The Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) of the European Commission has allocated Euro one million to assist the Jaffna population, particularly to improve the health and food situation of some of the most vulnerable people in the peninsula.

The assistance provided includes the chartering of a ship for transport and medical supplies for a population of 900,000. Safe water, sanitation and health facilities will also be provided to an estimated 15,000 people considered as particularly vulnerable”, a press release issued by ECHO said.

ECHO’s partners for this operation will be the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Action Centre le Faim (ACF).

ECHO has been providing humanitarian assistance to the victims of the conflict since 1993.
