Fourth Local Government elections tomorrow  
[March 19, 2002 - 10.45 GMT]

Local Government elections for 222 local bodies in 23 districts will be held tomorrow. 

Accordingly, 12 million voters countrywide, including the North-East, will elect representatives of their choice to 14 Municipal Councils, 37 Urban Councils and 258 Pradeshiya Sabhas. 

Elections to 71 local bodies in the North and East will be conducted on March 25. 

“Elections in 20 local bodies have been postponed,” a spokesman for the Department said. “148 nominations submitted by political parties and independent groups were rejected by the Department of Elections,” the spokesman said, he did not elaborate.  

Polling is scheduled to begin at 7.00 a.m. in 7400 polling stations.
