President considers executive action to quell possible election related violence

[March 19, 2002 - 10.00 GMT]

Presidential Spokesman said yesterday that it was very unfortunate and very disappointing to note that the government was unwilling to deploy the army for security on Election Day as requested by the President. He said that the President was considering the use of executive powers to ensure proper security in the country.

Earlier President Kumaratunga in a letter to Interior Minister John Amaratunga requested that the armed forces should be deployed to assist the police during the current election. Harim Peiris, Presidential Spokesman yesterday said that the request had been turned down.

“She had strong reason to believe that the fairness of the election was greatly in doubt. But her request had not been reciprocated nor supported by the government,” Harim Peiris said.

He stressed that the President’s suggestion had followed many credible reports on pre-election violence and intimidation, which led her to believe that polling on election day, would be marred.

“Both the Elections Commissioner and the service chiefs had agreed to her proposition,” spokesman said.
