Nine million vote in local elections today

Voting began this morning at 7400 polling booths to elect representatives to 222 local bodies.

Early reports indicated that the polling was not as brisk as during the General Election in December 2001.

A spokesman for the Centre for Monitoring election Violence (CMEV) said that there were some reports of violence but declined to elaborate saying ‘it was too early’.
