PM issues strict instructions to ensure free and fair election
[March 20, 2002 - 7.00 GMT]

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe Tuesday issued strict instructions to police to maintain law and order at today’s Local Government elections.

In a letter sent to the IGP last evening, the Prime Minister said that the police must ensure the conditions for a free and fair election.

“Ensuring a violence free election was a critical need,” the Premier said.

In a separate message, the Prime Minister also appealed to all political parties, candidates, elections officials and voters themselves to ensure a completely free and fair election.

In the meantime, a Local Government Election Monitoring Bureau has been set up at the Presidential Secretariat to monitor all acts of political violence at polling stations.

This Bureau will collect information regarding election violence, impersonation, election irregularities and other such incidents.
