Sri Lankan cricketers to battle against cancer
[March 20, 2002 - 6.00 GMT]

Sri Lankan cricketers will use their celebrity image to raise an estimated 750 million rupees for a modern cancer hospital in the country.

Sri Lanka’s Cricketers Association (SLCA) will construct the 700-bed state-of-the-art hospital in Maharagama.

The Sri Lankan team hopes to raise funds through an awareness programme that will interest charity donors, cricket fans and philanthropists overseas as well as within the country.

According to medical experts nearly seventy percent of cancer can be cured with proper equipment and facilities.

“There are thousands of Sri Lankans for whom the chances of survival are bleak when faced with cancer. We are in this with our hearts. We want every Sri Lankan to join the team in this effort,” Sanath Jayasuriya said.

“I lost my younger brother to the dreaded disease when he was just 16,” Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardena said.
