One Million Dollars for mine clearing in Sri Lanka

[March 22, 2002 - 11.00 GMT]

The World Bank and the Government of Sri Lanka signed an agreement on Wednesday, authorizing the release of US$ 1,000,000 from the World Bank’s Post Conflict Fund to co-finance the UNDP implemented Mine Action Project in the country.

The grant hopes to strengthen “capacity to survey, map and address landmines and train de-miners in the civil administration under the Project,” a World Bank press release said.

“This project is also supported by the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), and upgrades and improves the existing General Mine Assessment that was carried out in Jaffna to reach International Mine Action Standards (IMAS), and introduces general mine assessment to other areas outside Jaffna," a spokesperson of the UNDP Sri Lanka said.

The grant will also provide technical support to the resettlement programme of the UNHCR, the Mine Risk Reduction Programme of UNICEF and the North-East Irrigated Agriculture Project (NEIAP).
