SIDA provides 850,000 US Dollars for programs against child abuse and exploitation
[March 26, 2002 - 9.45 GMT]

The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) has provided USD 850,000 to UNICEF to promote children’s rights to protection from abuse and exploitation in Sri Lanka.

The programme includes preventive action and support for affected children, involving relevant sectors of the government and key NGO’s working together in partnership. The National Child Protection Authority will be the government focal point for this project.

The Authority was set up in 1998 by President Chandrika Kumaratunga. This was the first such Government authority in a third world country.

“This is the largest single contribution from the Swedish Government targeting the protection of children from abuse,” Colin Glennie, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) representative in Sri Lanka told the press today.

He said that although many countries of the world do not speak about the problem openly, Sri Lanka is one of the countries that had got off the face of denial.

“The response to the problem is favourable from the society as well as the government,” he said.

Ann-Marie Fallenius, Charge’d Affaires, SIDA and Prof. Harendra de Silva, Chairman, National Child Protection Authority were also present on the occasion.
