LTTE to open offices in Vavuniya and Mannar

[March 26, 2002 - 5.00 GMT]

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam [LTTE] are to open offices in the towns of Vavuniya and Mannar in areas under the control of the government in northern and north-western Sri Lanka.

A senior LTTE leader is already in Vavuniya to make the necessary arrangements. Our sources in Vavuniya reported that the offices are expected to be in operation by the end of the week.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed last month between the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE has provision for 50 unarmed LTTE members to be permitted freedom of movement in the areas of the North and the East, dominated by the Government of Sri Lanka for political work from D Day + 30. The Agreement came into force on February 23, 2002.

An informed source in the Government confirmed Mr. Balasigham’s arrival in the island this morning. He also said that the Norwegian peace negotiator Erik Solheim and the Norwegian Ambassador Jon Westborg had left for the Wanni Monday morning.
