“This award will further cement the friendship and cultural ties between Sri Lanka and India, which have remained unbroken for over 2500 years,” President Kumaratunga said in a message congratulating Pandit W.D. Amaradeva on his being honoured by the Indian government with the decoration of ‘Padma Sri’ - the highest civilian honour in India, Wednesday (27). Indian President K. R. Narayanan was the chief guest of the occasion.

President Kumaratunga said that the efforts of Pandit W. D. Amaradeva at evolving a new indigenous musical culture by integrating Sri Lankan folk music with the ragas of Indian music would pass the test of time.

“I consider this award as a recognition of Sri Lankan music by the Indian government,” Pandit Amaradeva said. He returned to the country Saturday.

Last year, Pandit Amaradeva won the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay award
