International Mental Health Confab in Colombo

An International Conference on Mental Health and Psychiatry from April 4 – 7 at Hotel Taj Samudra will be the main feature of the 20th anniversary celebrations of the National Council for Mental Health (Sahanaya).  It will be the first International Conference in Mental Health to be held in the country.

The Conference held under the theme – “Community Care: Issues and challenges” – will focus on ‘Work place Stress’; ‘Culture and Mental Health’; ‘Community Care’; ‘Child and Elder Mental Health’; ‘Suicide’ and ‘Psychological Trauma’. 

“It will also carry out a special session and a workshop on ‘Public Mental Health in Post Conflict Areas’,” a spokesman of Sahanaya said. 

“We are hopeful that this conference will play a major role in improving the country’s mental health,” he added. 

More than 25 distinguished speakers from USA, UK, Switzerland, India, Canada, Norway, Malaysia, Australia, The Netherlands and Bangladesh are due to participate in the Conference.  

Among them are Professors A. Sims, R. E. Kendell and R. Littlewood from the UK, Prof. Z. Taintor from USA, Prof. P Deva from Malaysia, Prof. M Weiss from Switzerland, Prof. A. Heiberg from Norway, Dr. B. Saraceno, Director of the Mental Health at WHO, and S. Murthy, Chief Editor of the World Health Report. 

Dr. Jayantha Kelegama, the President of Sahanaya said that two more activities are planned to mark the 20th anniversary of the Council - An exhibition titled “Pictures Paint a Thousand Words” and the construction of a Mental Health Resource Centre with residential facilities.
