Nuwara Eliya Water Supply Project begins in June

[April 4, 2002 - 10.00 GMT]

Work on the Nuwara Eliya Water Supply Project is due to begin in June this year. President Chandrika Kumaratunga recently approved a request for the acquisition of land for the proposed reservoir in Nuwara Eliya by Western Region Development Minister, M.H. Mohamed.

The small town centred on a picturesque plateau in central Sri Lanka has developed as a health resort since the site was discovered in 1819 by a group of Britishers on a hunting expedition.

A significant increase in the residential and floating population in the area over several years necessitated improvement of the water supply.

The town which has a steady influx of tourists throughout the year reaches its peak popularity in April.

It was in 1997 that the Urban Development Authority made plans under the close supervision of President Kumaratunga to develop Nuwara Eliya as a regional centre and gave high priority to infrastructure development in the area.

In 1998 Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) carried out feasibility studies and prepared a master plan at the request of the Government for the improvement of the water supply and sanitation facilities. The project is due to be completed next year.
