New constitution not amendments says TULF’s  Sivasithamparam

[April 5, 2002 - 13.30 GMT]

President of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) and national list MP, S. Sivasithamparan said they would support a new constitution, which would resolve national issues.

“There should be a new constitution to address national issues and amendments to the present constitution will not solve the problem,” he told the PRIU today.

The TULF President was reacting to statements made by Cabinet Spokesman Minister G. L. Peiris who said Parliament would be divided into 20 executive committees under the proposed Constitutional amendments, in line with those established by the 1931 Donoughmore Constitution.

The United National Party turned down a draft bill for a new constitution presented in Parliament in August 2000 by President Kumaratunga. The UNP was then in the opposition. The bill sought to give greater autonomy and administrative powers to regions to resolve the ethnic conflict.
