President makes one million rupee award to Pandit Amaradeva

Pandit Amaradeva after receiving an award of Rs. one million from President Kumaratunga.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga made a Rs. One million award from the President’s Fund to Pandit W. D. Amaradeva Monday for his outstanding contribution to music in Sri Lanka during the past fifty years and in appreciation of the honour he has brought to the country. 

Pandit W. D. Amaradeva was last year awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award. India recently recognised the music maestro with the decoration of Padma Shri - India’s highest civilian honour. 

In a congratulatory message President Kumaratunga commended the efforts of Pandit W. D. Amaradeva at evolving a new indigenous musical culture.
