Salary Reform Commission Report in June

[April 10, 2002 - 7.00 GMT]

The Special Commission appointed by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to recommend revisions to public sector employees’ salaries and working conditions is to submit its final report on June 15, a Presidential Secretariat news release stated.

The Commission established in 2000 submitted an interim report earlier.

President Kumaratunga met the members of the Commission led by its Chairman Tissa Devendra on Monday (April 8) to review the Commission’s progress. Minimising salary anomalies of the lower rankers and top rankers of the public sector was discussed at this meeting. The Commissioners said that they would be proposing a 70% salary hike for lower rankers and 36% for senior positions. They are also to recommend a Rs. 6,000 minimum monthly salary for the public sector.

The Commissioners have at this meeting expressed the opinion that there should be a certain balance between reducing the size of the existing public sector and increased salary scales.

The President pointed out that the stand of the People’s Alliance was to establish a Permanent Salaries Commission. She further said that the proposed salary hikes would promote greater efficiency in the public sector.
