Election violence victims to be compensated

[April 12, 2002 - 11.45 GMT]

The Government has decided to pay compensation to victims of election violence during the last General Election following a Cabinet Memorandum presented by President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

The Cabinet Memorandum has stated that a large number of election-related violence took place in various parts of the country during the last December General Election. The loss of lives numbered 67.

During the period from 1977 to year 2000 funds were allocated to the Rehabilitation of Persons, Properties and Industries Authority (REPPIA) to pay compensation to victims of such incidents of political violence. The Cabinet has decided to extend this scheme for payment of compensation to victims of election violence during the General Election 2001 as well.
