A Norwegian delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen called on President Chandrika Kumaratunga Friday afternoon. “The peace process, regarding a negotiated settlement of the ethnic problem was the subject of the discussion,” Presidential spokesman Harim Peiris said in a statement. The statement added that the Norwegian delegation had briefed the President at length regarding the progress of the peace process. President Kumaratunga has communicated her views in this regard.
PRESS RELEASEHer Excellency the President met today, 19th April 2002, with a delegation of the Royal Norwegian Government led by Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen and included Ambassador Jon Westborg and Special Envoy Eric Solheim. Leader of the Opposition Mahinda Rajapakse MP and Foreign Affairs Advisor to the President, Lakshman Kadirgamar MP were also associated with the President in the discussions. The meeting commenced in the early afternoon. The peace process, regarding a negotiated settlement of the ethnic problem was the subject of the discussion. The Norwegian delegation briefed the President at length regarding the progress of the peace process. The President communicated her views in this regard. Her Excellency the President remains fully committed to the continuation of the peace process begun by her and to a negotiated settlement of the ethnic conflict. The President will continue to provide advice and counsel to the Government in this regard.
