[June 7, 2002 - 9.00 GMT]

President Chandrika Kumaratunga has approved the allocation of Rs. 72.5 million in order to upgrade the operating theatre facilities in the Army hospitals in Colombo, Anuradhapura and Palaly.

The first instalment of Rs. 24 million was handed over by the President to Defence Minister Tilak Marapona on Wednesday. This contribution was made from the President’s Fund.

Earlier, the President had granted Rs. 66 million from the President’s Fund for the purchase of a C. T. Scanner for the Sri Lanka Army hospital in Colombo. Additionally, a grant of Rs. 45 million had been made for the provision of an insurance scheme covering personnel of the Armed Services and Police in the North and East.

Last year, the Rana Viru Seva Authority (RSVA) received a sum of Rs. 100 million from the President’s Fund for a housing scheme for defence services personnel.
