President Chandrika Kumaratunga said that the death of Murugesu Sivasithamparam, the President of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) and Member of Parliament is a major loss to our nation at this crucial turning point towards peace. The 79-year old veteran politician started his early political life in 1938. Then he was Deputy Speaker from 1965-68. The late Sivasithamparan formed the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) in 1970 and served as its President till his death. “He was highly respected as a leader not only in Sri Lanka but also by Tamil-speaking people elsewhere. Our country has lost his valuable experience and the vision of a moderate leader of the Tamils at a crucial juncture in its history,” President Kumaratunga said in a message of condolence.
