Annan pleased with peace initiatives in Sri Lanka

[June 17, 2002 - 9.20 GMT]

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has commended the initiatives of the government to bring the LTTE into the negotiating table and offered assistance, if necessary, for a permanent peace in Sri Lanka. The offer was made when Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando called on him at UN Headquarters in New York Thursday (13).

“The Secretary General made a special remark on the enthusiasm of the Sri Lankan people on the peace process, both in the North and the South,” the Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

Minister Fernando thanked the UN for its assistance in rehabilitation and reconstruction work in the North and the East.

During the Foreign Minister’s two-day stay in New York, he had meetings with the UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy, UN Under-Secretary General (Political Affairs) Kieran Prendergast, UNDP Chief Menock Brown and Under Secretary General (Disarmament Affairs) Jayantha Dhanapala.
